How to Be a More Accountable Leader

As we prepare to celebrate the teams that make the world of EVS strong using some strategies we laid out in a previous post, it’s also important to remember the keys to being a strong leader for them too. Accountability is the cornerstone of doing so, and in this blog post we will lay out 4 different ways to hold yourself more accountable as an EVS leader.

 

Promote Open Communication

Effective communication is vital for accountability. Foster an environment where open dialogue is encouraged. Share both successes and setbacks transparently. This not only builds trust but also keeps everyone informed about the status of projects and decisions. During your team meetings, try sharing a “rose” and a “thorn” of the week. For example, someone may have had a positive experience with a co-worker to share as their “rose” but a scheduling mistake was a “thorn” for their week. If your team is not comfortable at first, they can write successes and setbacks anonymously on cards that are read at meetings. Take it as an opportunity to improve, not criticize or punish.

Take Responsibility for Mistakes

No one is infallible, and as a leader, it’s crucial to own up to your mistakes. Acknowledge errors promptly and address them with a solutions-oriented mindset. Demonstrating humility and a willingness to learn from mistakes reinforces a culture where accountability is valued and not feared.

Provide More Constructive Feedback

Regular, constructive feedback helps EVS team members understand how they can improve and grow. Focus on specific behaviors and outcomes rather than personal attributes. This approach helps individuals take responsibility for their performance and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Again, you can use team meetings as a time to call out excellent work. Or a nice note in their locker might also be seen as a pleasant surprise that keeps your team motivated.

Stay Up-to-Date with your Industry

Remain informed about developments in your field and within your organization. Being knowledgeable allows you to make informed decisions and provide relevant guidance. Staying updated helps you lead effectively and maintain accountability in dynamic environments. Find newsletters, conferences, or certificate programs to help you stay on top of your game.

 

Being an accountable leader is about more than just personal responsibility; it’s about creating an environment where everyone understands their role and feels motivated to contribute their best. By setting clear expectations, leading by example, and fostering open communication, you can build a culture of accountability that drives success and strengthens your organization. Embrace these strategies and watch as your leadership transforms into a model of trust, respect, and effectiveness.
