Designed for Workarounds: A Qualitative Study of Hospitals’ Internal Supply Chains


This paper examines the internal supply chains of two hospitals. Hospitals, in particular, face a dire need to provide higher quality care for lower costs. In the wake of increased consumer visibility into hospital quality performance and reduced reimbursements, hospitals must learn how to create organizational routines that can deliver high quality care at the lowest possible cost. This challenge is gathering national attention, as evidenced by the 2011 creation by the U.S. government of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Innovation Center, whose mission is better health care, better health, and reduced costs.
